In continuing our discussion of “The Higher Education Bubble” begun in the Fall 2011 AQ, John Agresto begs to disagree. He doubts a bursting bubble, largely because Americans “have been persuaded that it’s somehow disgraceful not to give all a society can to the education industry.” Besides, the collapse of the liberal arts happened long ago. But in looking back at the history and state of the humanities, Prof. Agresto also looks forward, reminding us that remnants of “a universe of thought and culture” live on in “hundreds of stupendous teachers and guides, a number of centers, and a half-dozen worthy associations.” And that’s enough to reestablish what’s been lost.
