For many years, Carol Iannone has filled this space with her thoughtful and sometimes mordant observations on writings about current academic controversies. Carol reads widely and possesses a talent for spotting the good stuff: tendentiousness on the wing, solemn affirmations of the obvious and little outrages dressed up as debutantes. She also is quick to discern, among the hay ricks of criticism of higher ed, the few needles of original insight.

As part of a general reassignment of editorial responsibilities, Carol has relinquished this section and I have assumed the task. I doubt that I can come anywhere close to living up to Carol’s contributions. But as this section of Academic Questions invites a more relaxed tone, I’ll try to belay that anxiety and put on the amiable manner of a tour guide.
