A Word
It was a word that hurled
Each star into its space,
A word that gave the world
Its form, the moon its face,
A word that shaped the trees,
And raised up land from seas.
It was a word that turned
A light on in the sky,
A word from which birds learned
To chirp, the wind to sigh,
A word rained down on plants
And proffered music, dance.
It was a word that stirred
The life into each creature,
A quiet word conferred
A grace into each feature.
The cosmos, shining, stood;
The understatement: “Good.”
